Infinite Crosswords Help and Instructions

General Infinite Crosswords Information

We believe you'll have an easy time finding your way around in this game. All navigation is accomplished through labeled buttons. From the game's opening screen, you're only two clicks away from playing a puzzle of your choice (click the Play Crossword Puzzles button and then click the button showing the title of the puzzle you wish to play).

Please do explore the many choices in the drop-down menus at the top of the game interface. You may customize many aspects of the game environment.

Also, note that these top menu choices change when you are actually playing a crossword and that the Help section (when playing) has extensive information and tips to help you enjoy your play.

Some of the many things you may access and change through the top drop-down menus include:

  • GAME COLOR SCHEME - Pick the look you like!

  • AMBIENT SOUNDS - Choose a background sound that suits your mood.

  • SOUND VOLUME - Handy if you are playing in a cubicle at work.

  • SKILL LEVEL - Choose Master or Regular to fit your skills.

  • PUZZLE FONT - Choose your favorite: Arial, Times or Handwriting.

  • CLUE SIZE - Choose a font size that suits your eye.

  • GAME RESOLUTION - Choose higher resolutions (with increased sharpness) on faster computers.

  • BEST TIMES LISTING - Track your puzzle completion times to hone your competitive skills!

    Quick Play Instructions
Click any square in the puzzle to make that square the active letter and highlight its corresponding clue.

Click that same square again to change the orientation of the active clue from ACROSS to DOWN and vice versa. The SPACEBAR also toggles this orientation change.

Type your answer. Press the ENTER key or the TAB key to move to the next clue and answer in the same direction.

Select specific clues from the ACROSS and DOWN lists by clicking that clue. Click the scroll bars at the top or bottom of the clue lists to scroll through the clues.

    Mouse Controls

Click on any square in the puzzle to make that square's clue active. Click a second time on the same square to change the orientation of the active clue from DOWN to ACROSS and vice versa.

When you click a puzzle square, the active clue will appear in the clue list with a colored highlight.

You may select specific clues and scroll through the clue lists with the mouse as well. Click the small arrows at the top and bottom of the clue lists to scroll.

Select a specific clue by clicking on the clue in the list. The squares for its answer will be highlighted in the puzzle, and the first square for the answer will be the active square.

    Keyboard Controls

The spacebar switches the direction of the active clue from DOWN to ACROSS and vice versa.

Press the ENTER or TAB key to move to the next clue in the same direction you are currently working.

The keyboard's ARROW keys will move the active letter in the direction pressed. You may navigate the entire puzzle in this fashion.

Delete a letter you have typed by pressing the DELETE key (DEL key on Macs) - that square will remain the active letter. Delete a series of letters in an answer by using the BACKSPACE key (DELETE on Macs) - the active letter will move backward with each press.

Play Levels - Regular or Master

Depending upon your skill with crossword puzzles (and your desire for a challenge), you may wish to solve the puzzle as a "Master" rather than a "Regular" player. Here are the differences between the two levels:
  • REGULAR LEVEL - This is the default setting. Any letter that is incorrect will appear in a color other than black. This immediately signals an incorrect answer. When you are stumped by a clue, you may use the SOLVE menu options to quickly solve a single letter, a single answer or the entire puzzle.
  • MASTER LEVEL - All typed letters (whether correct or incorrect) appear in black. Plus, the options to SOLVE letters, answers or the entire puzzle are disabled.

    Options & Printing

The OPTIONS and PRINT drop-down menus include these choices:

  • SAVE - This complements the automatic saving features of this game (see section on "Puzzle Saving" for details).

  • RESET - This erases all of your entries, resets the game clock and erases any saved version of this puzzle.

  • PAUSE PLAY - This hides the puzzle while you are busy elsewhere.

  • SKILL LEVEL - Change your skill setting while playing.

  • PUZZLE FONT - Choose your favorite: Arial, Times or Handwriting.

  • CLUE SIZE - Choose a size that suits your eye.

  • FEEDBACK - Tell the puzzle editors what you think of a puzzle.

  • PRINT - You may print the puzzle "blank" or with your typed entries. You may also print the solution -- but don't peek!

    Puzzle Saving

This game is designed to automatically save your progress on every puzzle so that you will almost never lose your work. Its features include:

While you are playing, the program will check your entries every 3 minutes to see if you have changed (typed or erased) anything. If something has changed, it will save your puzzle automatically.

When you exit the puzzle screen, the program saves your puzzle if there are any entries.

Additionally, there is a "Save Puzzle" button in the Options menu that will save at your behest.

Please note: No system is totally foolproof. If your computer malfunctions, it is possible that you may lose a couple minutes of work.

    Play Tips

USE THE KEYBOARD - For maximum speed in working on the puzzle, keep your hand off the mouse. Use the arrow keys to move around the puzzle and the spacebar to switch between the DOWN and ACROSS orientations.

PROGRAM RESPONSIVENESS - This game uses vector graphics and smooth anti-aliased text to provide a lovely playing environment. If the game is not as responsive (quick) as you would like, please change the game's Resolution settings (available from the puzzle selection panel).

PAUSE THE GAME - If you like to measure performance against the game clock and something interrupts your play, choose Pause in the Options menu.
