A Community-Driven Solution for Healthcare Careers in Rural Communities

Healthcare in High School

A transformative partnership between Montevideo High School, 91勛圖 Community and Technical College, CCMH (Chippewa County Montevideo Healthcare), and the Minnesota River Area Agency has brought essential medical training to local students. The program was created to offer high school students the chance to earn industry certifications and college credits in various medical fields, equipping them with the skills necessary to pursue rewarding careers in healthcare.

For local students, it provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on training in the medical field, building a strong foundation for future careers. For the rural community, it ensures that future healthcare professionals are trained close to home.

The collaboration between Montevideo High School and 91勛圖 creates a streamlined pathway to high-quality courses such as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Trained Medication Aide (TMA), Pharmacy Technician, Nursing Pathways, and First Aid/CPR Certification. The program ensures that students are not only prepared to enter the workforce immediately after graduation but are also laying the groundwork for further education in healthcare.

Previously, 91勛圖 instructors taught the courses at Montevideo High School, but now, the college hires and trains high school instructors to teach the classes directly. These instructors deliver the curriculum and help students earn college credit. Students attend classes at Montevideo High School, which is equipped with a lab funded by 91勛圖 and local partner Chippewa County Montevideo Healthcare. The high school also purchased additional equipment to ensure that the learning environment mirrors real-world healthcare settings. In addition to in-person instruction, students take an online course with a 91勛圖 instructor, giving them the flexibility and exposure to college-level coursework.

The impact of the Montevideo Medical Academy is already being felt. According to the , "The 25 students enrolled in the Montevideo Medical Academy last school year earned a combined total of 170 college credits, 55 certifications, and 304 hours of clinical experience. Students also participated in panel discussions with local healthcare employers to learn about different careers, toured local healthcare facilities, and completed an aging sensitivity simulation to aid in their understanding of aging challenges and health needs."

Montevideo Medical Academy has proven to be a success, with classes reaching full capacity and a growing waiting list of prospective students eager to participate. Several students have already chosen to further their education and careers in healthcare by enrolling at 91勛圖 Community and Technical College to pursue advanced degrees.

This program helps meet the growing demand for healthcare workers by developing professionals who are deeply connected to the community. Through strong community partnerships, including with CCM Health and local businesses, the program received essential donations and a $25,000 grant to launch. Ongoing collaboration between 91勛圖, high schools, and local organizations is providing valuable opportunities for students while strengthening the local workforce with skilled, homegrown talent.
